Dominican University of CA : Internet / Intranet

Sight Design has worked with Dominican University of California for several years as their contracted Webmaster. Primary projects completed include both the university’s web site and intranet. The public website is used by current and prospective students as well as alumni and parents. It includes a scalable forms system, a course schedule database, and e-commerce functionality.

The University Intranet is used primarily by faculty and staff. This project involved integration with several existing databases, creation of a simple document management system, and implementation of a community bulletin board. As part of the local network domain, it allows access only to authenticated domain members.

Content for both the public site and intranet is fully editable via a rules-based WYSIWG Web-based editing tool suite. This lets faculty easily add and edit content for the various university departments. An administrative queue keeps content from going live until approved.

Recommendations

1. SightDesign recommended the replacement of FrontPage as the primary content management tool. FrontPage was found to be too difficult to use, and created unnecessary IT overhead. The new content management tools keep pages throughout the site uniformly designed and stable.
2. The use of disparate MSAccess databases was replaced by a single MSSQL database installation.
3. The content approval queue has all content additions and changes going though the PR and Marketing department for approval. This keeps all content in line with the University’s corporate identity standards.
4. Replacement of unsecured forms with SSL and online payment functionality.
